“Lift with your core… activate the core”, I could hear the muffled voice of swimming instructor during my class.
It is then I realised how unknowingly we are using the core muscles to maintain the balance of the body.
By working on the core muscles, you can lose the fat fast & tighten the muscles to get the desired flat belly.
A healthy back, good posture, the ability to play competitive sports like basketball, swimming, running, kayaking and other activities, all result from a strong core.
Let’s strengthen our core on this international Yoga Day and build abdominal muscles with these effective Yoga Poses.
They not only help you to reduce the stubborn belly fat but increase your stamina, posture & overall health too. Let’s get started with the Yoga to lose belly fat….
Yoga to Lose Belly Fat
1. Adho Mukha Svanasana or Downward facing dog
An integral part of Surya Namaskar, this pose is known for it’s restorative and healing benefits along with building the core. Stay in this pose for 5 to 10 breaths.
Breathe in and raise one leg to transition into One Legged Downward Facing Dog (Eka pada Svanasana). Breathe out and bring the leg down. Don’t forget to repeat on the other side.
Always start with a 15 minute warm-up before any exercising regime.
2. Chakravakasana or Sunbird Pose
This is a beginner level pose that helps in strengthening the core and stabilising the balance. If you can, stay in the pose for 10 breaths and switch.
Always start with a single repetition, move to 2-3 but never more than 3 repetitions of any yoga pose ever.
3. Virabhadrasana III or Warrior III
Engage the core and your sight, lift through the belly, as you maintain the balance on your foot. This is excellent yoga to lose belly fat & improve your body balance.
In the beginning, you might take a support and gradually proceed without it.
4. Vasisthasana or Side Plank
Like many practitioners, I too have a love-hate relationship with planks. But there’s no denying how effective they are in building the core and toning the abdomen.
You can either do it as a part of Surya Namaskar or as a stand alone pose, holding it for as long as you can.
Side Planks or beginner level of Vasisthasana works the entire core, strengthening arms, shoulders and wrists.

How about going one step further and transition from Side plank to Wild Thing (Camatkrasana)
This flow will not only work out the core, but open your chest, lungs and shoulders, strengthening the upper back along with losing the belly fat.
It is important that your body is properly warmed up, following the necessary preparatory poses. Please consult a doctor if you suffer from heart trouble or any other ailment, knee, wrist, back or shoulder injury.
