Satya was sitting in his wheelchair. He looked on proudly at his son who was sitting among the who’s who of the city. He was accompanied by his wife, The convention hall was abuzz with noise & action. Satya was a proud father. He couldn’t hold his emotions. He looked at his wife with tears in his eyes. It was the happiest day of his life.
It seemed as if it all happened yesterday.Ved was born to Satya & Rohini. They were extremely happy. He was a bright boy. Active in academics as well as extracurricular. Every time he won a trophy, Satya’s considered as his own victory. Satya was an honest & intelligent man himself. He cleared civil service exams in first attempt & got a decent posting. He was famed for his dedication to work & honesty. He never took any undue advantage of his position in any form. Everyone respected him.
Ved grew up an ambitious boy. He was quite clear about what he wanted to do & how he wanted to do it. His priorities were clearly marked. Unlike his father, he was inclined towards business. He always said he wasn’t made for 9 to 5 job. His parents supported him. They wanted him to succeed in whatever he did.
One day he came back home with a business proposal. He wanted his father to use his contacts & get the land cleared by government official where the factory was to come up.Satya flatly refused. It was against his ethics & morals. He led all his life with honesty & pride, he couldn’t sacrifice it for anything, not even for his son. Ved tried to reason, gave examples of other parents who readily helped their kids by every mean possible. But all his reasoning fell on deaf ear. He got up from the chair
“so you won’t help me, even if my whole life is destroyed
“no son, I am just trying to say I can t help you the way u want. It’s against my ethics”
“your principles, your morals, your wish. Why this is always about you. Since beginning, I have always struggled to acquire even simplest things because of your stubbornness.Look at everybody else, your colleagues. They have achieved much from the same position. Their kids live a life of luxury & opulence. But we are still stuck with this old house & your second-hand car. I can’t live this life anymore .”
Satya listened to him in silence ” I still can’t do what you want me to do ”
” Fine, I am leaving.I never want to see you all again “. & he left never to some back.
Satya & Rohini used to get his whereabouts from some common friends. At a couple of occasions, they tried to call him, but he never reverted.Years passéd
One of Ved’s friend informed them that he was to receive a young entrepreneur awards. The felicitation ceremony was on coming Monday.
Satya was overwhelmed ” I am so proud, did he send you to inform us. He wants us to come to the function. Why didn’t he come himself ”
“Uncle. he doesn’t even know that I am here,” friend’s face dropped
“oh, but I m going to attend the function. My condition doesn’t allow me, but I am not going to miss it for the world ‘
HIs wife & doctor were dead against his decision. He recently went through a major surgery, his heart was too weak to take any exertion. All arguments, reasoning failed against his will & enthusiasm.
Finally, the moment came. The chief guest presented the trophy to Ved. Satya was overjoyed. He almost jumped out of his wheelchair. Tears were rolling down his cheeks. He was vigorously clapping & cheering.Suddenly a flash of pain struck on the left side of chest. He cupped his heart with his palm. Everything went dark. Rohini screamed for help.
Ved rushed towards his parents. His father’s lifeless body was lying on wheelchair & his gaze still fixed at the direction where his dear son just received an award ………………….
