Singapore has always been in my bucket list. I wanted to travel to this beautiful land & experience its culture & cuisine. I heard a lot about the astonishing variety of cuisines available there. So when I was invited by my friend Sreebha Nair, I was more than happy to oblige.
What A Morning ! Sree treated me with Kopi & Kaya Toast with eggs . Its a typical Singaporean breakfast which has sweet coconut jam lavishly spread over the toast & served with boiled eggs . The local ‘ Kopi’ or coffee kick starts your day. After having this gobbling breakfast, I was rearing to go & explore the wonder Singapore & its Food !
The Taste Of Singapore
Singapore is a foodies’s delight. You will find number of cuisines & enormous dishes to sample. From my experience, I can say that you can sample a new dish every single day for a month or more !
The variety that Singapore offers is mind bobbling. From fine dinning restaurants to Hawkers food, nothing is going to disappoint you. You will find food suiting all tastes, food habits & budgets. That’s the magic of the Food Heaven, Singapore.
Wanna see what all I sampled. Without much ado I am going to take you with me to the Food Safari in Singapore.
Roti Prata, this is undoubtedly the most popular Singaporean dish made with or without eggs ( while making dough). The flaky & crisp flat bread ( quite similar to Indian Roti ) is stuffed with variety of stuffing meat, veggies, eggs & much more. I was instantly reminded of Kathi rolls back home.
Hokkin Mee, the signature dish is found only in Singapore. A combination of rice noodles & egg noddles cooked with pork cubes, prawn, squid & fish cake.
Bak Kut Teh ( Meat Bone Tea), the name comes from the tea-like brown color. Succulent pork ribs are slowly cooked in a herbal broth. It contains many spices that gives this dish mouth watering aroma.
Satay, mainly a Singaporean version of our own Tandoori Tikkas. It comes in both vegetarian & non vegetarian version.
For A Vegetarian Delight
After just two days in Singapore, I was craving for vegetarian food. Non vegetarian food was found in abundance. I didn’t expect much variety of vegetarian food. I discussed this with Sree over the dinner. She smiled & said ” Singapore is not going to disappoint you dear ! There is something for every one.”
Next day what I found was such a sweet & thoughtful gesture by her.She left a collage of hand written notes for me that had names of the vegetarian dishes & places before leaving for work . I went ” Sooo Sweeet Sree ! Love You ”
She suggested a number of restaurants & food to try. I hand picked few & went ahead on my culinary journey.
The first place I went to was Vegan Burg. It offer a variety of vegan food. I picked up the menu & ordered Chilly Krabby burger. What came in front of me was nothing less than magic. It was the most luscious vegan food I have ever tasted. The Chilly Krabby burger tasted divine. Chilly potato & spinach pops , ummm, I still drool over the awesome taste. I was little apprehensive about the Vegan Frank , But when I was comforted by the ever smiling staff of Vegan Burg I sampled it. It was heavenly & didn’t have any animal products in it. Awesome isn’t it .
During my stay in Singapore I also sampled other fabulous dishes that Sree has recommended.
Ayam Mesak Merah, a vegetarian version of this dish use mock chicken. It is basically a tomato gravy with distinctive flavor of lemon grass. The texture is silky & smooth. It is full bodied & aromatic. Sample it with steam rice & I am sure you are going to go back asking for more.
Seaweed Roll, the most healthy food using loads of fresh vegetables wrapped in soy paper. The looks are deceptive. I got confused too, st first. But when I learnt it is veggie-friendly, I immediately ordered it.Since then it has been one of my favorite dishes.
Curry Laksa, a comfort food available across the street & restaurants. There are many versions available each having some distinctive style of preparing the Laksa paste. It’s filling, healthy & soulful.
Lets Talk About My Favorite : Peranakan Cuisine
After sampling many Singaporean delicacies, it was rather difficult for me to choose one particular dish as my favorite. Although what stood out in terms of taste, variety & presentation was the Peranakan Cuisine.
Peranakan Cuisine, is the signature cuisine of Singapore. It has a wonderful history that makes it even more special. It is a blend of Chinese spices & Malay Style cooking that makes it spicy, tangy, full of flavors & aroma. There are many regional variations of the cuisine each having distinctive aroma, spices & method of cooking. A Must Try while you are in Singapore.
And do u know who make these lip licking, Army of Little Chefs .Adorable isn’t it ! :)
